Foundational Capability
The ground a community already stands on: identity, people, and the institutions that hold them together.

A PERMANENT AFRICAN INSTITUTION
What it has lacked is a system that recognises, connects, and compounds that knowledge at scale.
Reclaim · Reorganize · Multiply
Before we ask what a community needs, we ask what it already carries.
Sankofa is a discipline of attention before it is a programme of action. Everything that follows on this site unfolds from that single reversal.
The Institution
Sankofa Africa Alliance exists to make one discipline durable across countries, partners, and generations. It is built for the long horizon: its measure is whether the capability it helps name and reorganise continues without it.
The Alliance holds a Constitution, a Method, and a Canon. Together they carry the practice; together they outlast any individual, funder, or programme.

The Sankofa Method
Every Sankofa engagement follows the same sequence, applied without variation. What is reclaimed is already there. What is reorganised is placed in a form that lets it grow. What multiplies carries itself beyond us.

01
Before intervention, there is attention.
02
What was always there is named, honoured, and made legible.
03
Reclaimed capability is placed in a structure that lets it thrive.
04
What has been reorganised carries itself beyond the original site.
Capability Domains
Sankofa does not work across sectors. It strengthens capability through one institutional model: the foundations a community already stands on, the transformation those foundations make visible, and the enablement that lets capability multiply beyond us.
Foundation
Identity. People. Institutions.
Transformation
Livelihoods. Wellbeing. Ecology.
Enablement & Multiplication
Evidence. Knowledge. Infrastructure.

Tier Two
Where strengthened foundations become visible — in livelihoods, wellbeing, and ecological systems.
Tier Three
How capability travels: evidence, knowledge systems, and digital infrastructure.
An institution is what remains when the personalities that founded it are no longer in the room. Sankofa is designed for that day.
